'No wonder Andrew Mackay voted to keep his second-home allowance last year. He and his wife, who is also an MP, topped the list of married couples who claimed the allowance last year. Since 2001, when the figures were first produced, they have claimed around £285,000 towards the cost of their London home, which is estimated to be worth £2million. Liberal Democrat MPs in a similar position have not claimed the allowance and all that is needed is an overnight allowance to cover unavoidable stays in London.'
