The Green Party, or rather their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bracknell, David Young, does seem to have it in for the Liberal Democrats (Standard, 7 January). I wonder why?
David Young asserts that as a Party of the past, we cannot be trusted to deliver the policies that are needed to combat climate change, protect the environment and meet our long term sustainable energy requirements. Where that leaves the discredited environmental positions of the other two main equally ageing parties is anybody's guess!
Britain does not have a credible low carbon energy policy. Liberal Democrats recognise that any solution to our energy problems must also help to deal with climate change. That is why we have developed a strategic and fully costed energy plan to deliver a zero carbon Britain by 2050 without the use of dirty coal or nuclear power. Our plan is safe, secure and sustainable based on massive energy efficiency, investment in a super grid and the use of sun, wind and wave power.
The Green Party should be pleased that so many of its key environmental issues are now being taken forward by the other main parties even if, under our archaic 'first pass the post' electoral system, there is very little prospect of it being able to do so directly. At least a vote for the Lib Dems would ensure that these issues are pursued and give added weight to the case for proportional representation, which can only be in the Green Party's best long-term interests.
