Iraq: Labour and Conservatives still on the wrong track

7.31.10pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th Oct 2004

With the Iraq Survey Group's report released recently, the world has finally acknowledged that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction. Yet both Labour and the Conservatives maintain their original stance was correct; that the price we are now paying for having removed Saddam Hussein has proved its worth. Given the level of terror alert we are now at, it is impossible to claim that the world is a safer place for the removal of Saddam Hussein.

The Liberal Democrats have stuck firmly to their anti-war stance throughout. No matter what Saddam Hussein wanted to do, it is clear, from the Iraq Survey Group's reports, from Hans Blix's recent statements on the matter, and from evidence provided by numerous weapons inspectors, that Saddam Hussein was not posing a threat and could not have posed a threat to any other country, let alone the UK.
