A Fair Deal For Pensioners10.19.16pm GMT Wed 8th Dec 2004 Bracknell Liberal Democrats will launch their campaign to bring a fair deal for Bracknell's pensioners on Saturday 11th December at the Bandstand in Bracknell Town Centre. A petition to Tony Blair can be signed on the day. Lee Glendon, Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats has initiated the new campaign: "Liberal Democrats would make a big positive difference to the lives of pensioners in Bracknell. Pensioners play a vital voluntary role in our community as parents, grandparents and active citizens making our community richer and more cohesive. We feel strongly that under successive Conservative and Labour Governments pensioners have been treated as second class citizens. The petition will demand of Tony Blair the following actions: 1. The introduction of a Citizen's Pension with an end to means testing starting with those aged 75 and older - benefiting women and carers in particular. 2. An immediate increase in the basic state pension plus a new link to earnings for those aged 75 and over. 3. Free personal care for pensioners requiring residential care 4. An end to the unfair Council Tax. 5. Free off-peak local travel. The petition will run from December until March 2005 and is also available to sign online via "Related Links".
