Bracknell Lib Dems saw their vote surge by 20% last night as they increased their votes from 8,424 (2001) to 10,128 under a tight squeeze from both the Conservatives and Labour. The gap between the Lib Dems and Labour has narrowed from almost 8,000 votes to just over 3,000 votes with the Conservatives winning with 49.7% of the vote. Turnout was slightly higher than 2001 at 63.4%. Lee Glendon said: "I would like to thank all those people who voted Lib Dem yesterday. We increased the number of votes by 20% and we are now sitting on Labour's shoulders in the Constituency. It is clear that our policies have met with increasing levels recognition and approval and we have a strong base to build on for success in the future. I am also delighted that so many young people have joined our team and pledged their support to the Lib Dems over the course of the campaign. Our big step forward in Bracknell is matched by the national picture where the Lib Dems have won 23% of the popular vote nationwide (up from 18% in 2001) winning more MPs and taking the Lib Dems into all areas the country. With a much reduced Labour majority in Westminster, Lib Dem MPs will have an even greater influence over the policies and conduct of the government during the next Parliament. My thanks again to everyone who supported our campaign in Bracknell. The future's a bright one for the Lib Dems."
